Connect a Wireless Router
Router precautions
Routers can be useful if you want to create your own wireless environment in your residence hall room, or connect more than one device to the network. Make sure to follow these instructions carefully because an improper set-up can cause network problems in your entire hall!
You are responsible for all downloads and traffic that travels through your router. To prevent others from making use of your connection, take steps to secure who can access the Internet through your router. We have information about securing your router.
Router setup instructions
- Plug your router’s uplink port (commonly labeled WAN) into the wall jack, and your computer into one of the regular numbered ports. It is very important that you do not plug any of the numbered ports into the wall jack, as this has the potential to prevent you and your neighbors from properly connecting to the internet.
- Once everything is connected corrected, plug in your router’s power supply.
- If all goes well, your computer should now have wired connectivity. Please open a browser and go through the registration process.
- Now is the time to configure your wireless settings. Because routers are so varied, we cannot offer generic instructions for setting up wireless. We recommend that you use the resources offered by your router’s manufacturer, and if you need further help contact ResTek. Typically, the address for a router’s administration interface is 192.168.0.1Here are links to the most popular router manufacturer’s online support:
NOTE: During the first few weeks of each quarter, we recommend you connect your computer directly to the Ethernet jack on the wall as a temporary solution until a consultant can arrange a room visit to assist you.
