Server Admin

Job description

The Server Administrator will be responsible for maintaining University Residence’s servers that support the Residential Computer Labs and Ethernet connectivity within the Residence Halls.

Responsibilities

  • Setup, maintain and install secure OpenBSD and FreeBSD servers
  • Maintain awareness of current network and computer security issues
  • Ability to troubleshoot unexpected problems (at unexpected times…)
  • Research and implement disaster recovery procedures (e.g. backups)
  • Apply patches or updates in a timely manner
  • Manage accounts and permissions
  • Maintain DNS and DHCP for on-campus residents
  • Maintain mail server
  • Maintain MySQL database server and provide support to the Web Application Developers
  • Maintain Apache web servers and programming environments
  • Maintain bandwidth management hardware and software
  • Write documentation of server configurations and settings
  • Support the mission and goals of the Office of University Residences and the ResTek program.
  • Maintain server and network-related scripts
  • Maintain network firewalls and packetshaper
  • Maintain network monitoring tools (e.g. Nagios, Symon)

Term of position and training

Must be available to work 15-19 hours per week during the academic year. Must be available to work at least 20 hours per week during the summer. Hourly wage is 9.90 per hour for both work-study and non-work study students. The Server Administrator reports to the Assistant Director for University Residences IT. On-the-job training is provided.

Qualifications

(Many of the skills and knowledge are gained through on-the-job training and experience.)

  • A working knowledge of and actual experience in setting up, configuring, and maintaining a server and services
  • Experience with web programming in UNIX-like environments
  • Basic knowledge of DNS and DHCP configurations
  • Basic knowledge of MySQL, PHP and Apache
  • Basic knowledge of network protocols and troubleshooting
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment both efficiently and courteously
  • Good problem solving skills and communication skills
  • A willingness and ability to help other staff members troubleshoot server related problems
  • Willingness and availability to have a flexible, on-call schedule for the duration of employment
  • Must maintain a minimum of ten (10) credits per quarter for undergraduates, and eight (8) credits for graduates during the entire duration of employment.
  • Must maintain a minimum 2.00 cumulative grade point average.
  • Preference may be given to students with on-campus living experience.

Additional qualifications:

  • Experience creating and managing web applications
  • Experience with LDAP account management
  • Experience with shell scripting
  • Experience with the CVS revision control system or equivalent
  • Experience with network-level security issues
  • Experience with network virus detection and prevention strategies
